I don’t mean to get on a soapbox here, but I have been noticing lately that as a society we seem to be becoming more casual in our approach to just about every area of life. While it is perfectly okay to be comfortable in your skin, your dress, etc.; in many ways I wonder where all our “casualness” is leading us when it comes to setting standards, excellence, or raising the bar with the next generation.

I have had several experiences with several businesses lately where I have been struck by the lack of attention to details, protocol, customer service etc. The attitude of the employees seems to be “let’s just get by.” I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t matter if it is a McDonald’s or a high end restaurant, I personally take notice of people who are helpful, upbeat, and offer great customer service. I also notice those who are so laid back they are not able to communicate or slur their words or look like they just rolled out of bed.

If you are in a customer service driven industry, then it is probably a good idea for the person who is either on the phone or on the front line to be a good communicator and speak distinctly. It is just good common sense. Okay, I’m off of my soapbox here!

The number one rule for success – pay attention to details. More importantly, pay attention to the small things, because everything in life really does matter. If I am your boss, and I see you paying attention to details, going the extra mile, or doing your work with enthusiasm and excellence, you can be sure I am going to pay attention to you. Whether you are a dishwasher or an office manager, you are on your way to promotion. I believe Jesus once said it this way… If you are faithful in a few things now, He will eventually put you in charge of many things.”
