Better Thoughts, Better Life

Often we want different results in our life but we keep doing the same things over and over. We then wonder why things aren’t changing for us? The truth is how can you get different results when you keep doing the same old things over and over again? This also applies to the thought realm as well. You can’t get different results by thinking how you have always thought. Let me say that again. You can’t get different results by thinking how you have always thought! I am not sure many people are aware of this simple and yet profound reality. In fact, I would say a lot of people are very passive when it comes to their thinking and thought life and they wonder why things never change for them.

Your life is always going to flow in the direction of your most predominate thoughts. Whether we realize it or not, if our thoughts are predominately negative we aren’t going to get much positive results in our life. When people come to me feeling “stuck” in life, it often has to do with their thinking and their beliefs. As a coach, I am challenging my clients to examine their thinking and to consider how they can change their inner dialogue to get better results for their life.

This not an impossible task or reality. Just because you have thought a particular way your entire life doesn’t mean you can’t change it. You really have more control over your thoughts than you even realize. It is going to require effort and sometimes this is where it can break down for people. For example, if you are out of shape, it is going to require some effort to exercise and get in shape. The same is true with our thought life. It is going to require some effort and exercising your brain muscle if you will. How do you do that? You take control of your thoughts. You arrest or stop them. You dialogue with yourself about them. Ask yourself, “Is this a lie or the truth.” More importantly, tell yourself the truth. It requires tuning in and listening to your self-talk and challenging your beliefs. Is my inner script or dialogue discouraging me, keeping me stuck or helping me to get the results I want? If not, what would be a better thing to tell yourself than that?

If you want to life a better life and get better results in your life, you have to spend some time working with your thinking and getting a better script for your life. I once heard Dr. Fred Luskin express it this way, if you were a landlord would you rent your house to thieves and thugs? Not likely! Then why do we rent out our mental space to anger, rage, negativity, and toxic thinking?

One thing is for sure, if you want different results in your life, you have to do different things to get those results and this also applies to our thinking as well. Better thoughts produce a better life.
