I have been thinking a lot about words lately. They fly out of our mouth so freely, if we are upset or angry or even excited! The writer of the Book of James says that the little instrument in our mouth called our tongue is a powerful thing. Like the rudder on a ship, our tongue or our words have the power to direct the course of our life. He goes on to say that a tongue out of control is like a raging fire. By the way, it generally takes about 12 years for a forest to recover from a forest fire!
Believe it or not, one of the simplest ways to begin to change your life is to tune in to what you are saying. Some call it affirmations, but I prefer to think of our words as declarations. What are you declaring? What are you forecasting about your well-being or even your future? Not only are others listening, but most importantly, you are listening, and better yet your mind and heart are receiving the message.
How are you at being your own best friend? How are you at encouraging yourself? Are you your own best cheerleader or your own worst critic or maybe both? It really does matter.
If the power of life and death resides in the tongue, as the writer of Proverbs declares and those who love it will eat the fruit of those words, then maybe we do need to tune in more, think before we speak and consider getting a new script for our life.
